I did a student loan refinance in XX/XX/XXXX. The terms were lower interest only payments to begin with a variable interest rate. I was charged an amount to pay. In XXXX of XXXX, I started paying extra and the servicer was applying the extra to the principal to reduce the balance I was being charged interest on. I was making progress. The new servicer, Universal Accounting Services took over in XX/XX/XXXX. The extra I paid was not consistently applied to the principal. When I called today, they said they choose to apply the extra wherever, which isn't the terms I agreed to with the lender. The rude woman named XXXX XXXX (? ) refused to listen, wouldn't look at the account payments, and refused to get me a supervisor. I called back and a nice person XXXX XXXX, explained that because of their accounting practices, if interest accrues, its paid first and whatever is left would then be applied to reduce the principal. XXXX told me they recently updated they system so that any time a change occurs, a payment is made, or a statement is generated the interest is added to the account. This means that I'll never have the full amount of money I'm paying extra deducted from the principal because they are now adding the interest onto my account multiple times during the month. The terms of my loan were such that the interest accrued and I paid that interest. It's not a fair practice to accrue the interest more frequently so when I pay extra it pays that instead. I'm trying to pay my loan down and these unfair practices are causing me not to make progress with my finances. The new servicer has over all been uncooperative. I've expressed clearly in my calls that I want to pay things down and their practices prevent that.
