Consumer Narrative
On XX/XX/XXXX, unbeknownst to us, a fraudster hijacked the email of XXXX XXXX in XXXX XXXX, Florida. This hijacked email address directed us to wire transfer {$8200.00} to a Wells Fargo account for the purchase of furniture we had selected with our interior designer. We emailed back and forth to this hijacked email account confirming that our funds for the furniture had been received. Several weeks later, our interior designer called to let us know that XXXX never received our payment. XXXX went to a local Wells Fargo branch office and notified them of the fraudulent account that accepted these funds and asked for an investigation into this transfer. Wells Fargo refused to provide any information since XXXX did not have an account with Wells Fargo. We also contacted Wells Fargo, who also told us they would not assist since we were not account holders at Wells Fargo. At this time, we notified the XXXX Department at XXXX XXXX XXXX and we were assigned a detective. The detective was able to get information that the account holder opened his account in XXXX and was a loyal Wells Fargo account holder until this fraud occurred. The detective was told by Wells Fargo that there were XXXX in-branch withdrawals of {$4000.00} each, XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX and a XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX. At this time, the Wells Fargo account holder had been locked out of his account and therefore made a fraud report on XX/XX/XXXX. Then, on XX/XX/XXXX, Wells Fargo notified the account holder that they would be closing the account due to this fraudulent activity and all funds remaining in the account would be sent back to the sender of the wire transfer. The detective requested from Wells Fargo, but never received, certified documents to the suspect account. Unknown at this time was who removed this {$8000.00} from the account and where that money went. The question remains as to how these XXXX {$4000.00} withdrawals were made. Did someone use the in-branch ATM? Did someone get a cashiers check at the branch? We firmly believe that since these withdrawals happened in-branch, there should be video or other documentation as to who removed these funds. Unfortunately, Wells Fargo refused to provide any further information so the detective closed the case. We firmly believe that since these withdrawals happened in-branch, there should be video or other documentation as to who removed these funds. Wells Fargo should be held accountable for further investigating this fradulent activity.
