Consumer Narrative

I am submitting this complaint regarding Equifaxs handling of a credit reporting error that is causing immediate and significant harm. Equifax is reporting one or more accounts on my credit file that * * do not belong to me * *. These inaccurate items directly caused the denial of a federal Parent PLUS student loan, which is necessary for my daughters enrollment for the Spring 2026 academic term. Classes begin imminently, and the financial aid timeline is extremely time-sensitive. I have formally disputed the inaccurate account ( s ) with Equifax and provided documentation confirming my identity and address. I have also made multiple attempts to resolve this matter by phone, online dispute submission, and follow-up communications. Despite this, Equifax has refused to escalate the dispute or provide any meaningful assistance beyond repeating standard investigation timelines. When I requested escalation or manual review due to the urgency and federal education consequences, Equifax representatives stated that expedited or escalated review was not an option, even though this dispute involves an account that does not belong to me and has immediate financial consequences. I was told that I must either file a police report or contact the creditors directly despite the fact that these are not my accounts and I have no relationship with the creditors. Requiring a police report in this situation is unreasonable and inappropriate. I am disputing an * * inaccurate credit reporting error * *, not reporting a crime. Filing a police report for an account that is simply not mine is not required under the Fair Credit Reporting Act ( FCRA ), and Equifax has not explained why less burdensome alternatives are insufficient. Additionally, Equifax has attempted to shift the burden to me to contact creditors for accounts I do not recognize, rather than fulfilling its legal obligation under the FCRA to conduct a reasonable reinvestigation by contacting the furnishers itself. This refusal to assist meaningfully has placed my family at risk of losing necessary education funding solely due to XXXX delay and lack of cooperation. I am not asking for special treatment or preferential outcomes only that Equifax comply with its obligations under the FCRA to promptly and reasonably reinvestigate inaccurate information, particularly when the error is clearly identity-related and supported by documentation. This matter is causing ongoing harm, stress, and potential disruption to my daughters education. I am requesting CFPB assistance because Equifax has failed to take reasonable steps to resolve an obvious inaccuracy or escalate the matter despite clear evidence and documented urgency. -- -
