Consumer Narrative

On XX/XX/year>, at approximately XXXX XXXX, I deposited {$500.00} in cash onto my Chime account at a XXXX location in XXXX, XXXX. This was a routine deposit intended for bill payments, as I am a single mother and student relying on this account for essential expenses, especially during the holiday season. Early the next morning, on XX/XX/year> : At XXXX XXXX and XXXX XXXX unauthorized transactions occurred from XXXX, XXXX ( a location I have no connection to ). These included : Two transfers totaling {$400.00} ( {$200.00} and {$200.00} ) to an unknown individual in North Carolina. One transfer of {$100.00} to an unknown individual in California. I do not know anyone in Georgia, North Carolina, or California, and no one has been authorized to access or use my account in those states. The device used by the unauthorized party was an XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, which has never been associated with my account. My authorized devices are a XXXX XXXX ( previous phone ), an XXXX XXXX XXXX, and an XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. At XXXXXXXX XXXX, I received a notification from Chime asking if I had changed my email address and advising me to call immediately if not. I was awake and responded promptly by logging into my account, where I discovered the fraudulent transfers. I immediately called Chime support to report the issue. During the call, Chime claimed to secure my account, restricting access to only my recognized devices and enabling two-factor authentication for any unknown logins. However, while still on the phone with Chime at around XXXX XXXX I received another push notification indicating that my phone number had been updated without my authorizationagain from XXXX, Georgia. I informed the representative in real-time, took screenshots, and provided this as evidence. Chime had to perform another security verification to revert the changes and re-secure the account, indicating a failure in their initial measures. I filed a police report immediately after the call and submitted disputes for the unauthorized transactions twice, providing evidence including screenshots, timestamps, device details, location discrepancies, and the police report. Despite this, Chime denied both disputes, stating no error occurred on their end. This has left me without the stolen funds ( totaling {$500.00} ), causing significant financial hardship. I now feel unsafe using my Chime account or card due to these repeated security failures and am considering closing the account if the funds are not recovered promptly. I believe this incident points to a systemic security vulnerability at Chime, as the unauthorized access bypassed their safeguards, including device recognition and notifications. Similar issues have been reported by other Chime users, and I request the CFPB investigate Chimes handling of fraud disputes and security protocols to prevent further harm to consumers
