Consumer Narrative
I obtained a rooftop solar energy system from XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, later known as XXXX XXXX, for my home at XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX in Illinois. The system was financed through a loan from Digital Federal Credit Union ( DCU ). XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX sales representatives told me that the solar system would significantly reduce or eliminate my electric bill so that I would essentially swap my utility bill for the loan payment. I relied on these representations when I agreed to the installation and financing. I signed a XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX with XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, which stated that they would design, permit, install, and interconnect the system at my property. The DCU loan was used to pay for this system, and I have been making payments on the DCU loan. However, the solar system has never performed as promised and has now stopped working altogether. I am paying : A full electric bill, as if I had no solar at all ; and The DCU loan payment every month for a system that does not work. XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX has since filed for bankruptcy and stopped operations, so there is no viable contractor to fix the system or honor any warranty obligations. Attempts to resolve I have : XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX in the past to request repairs and get the system working. Contacted DCU many times by phone and through member support, explaining that the solar system is not functioning and that I am paying for a defective product. Reached out to independent solar service companies to inspect the system and explore whether it can be repaired. Despite nearly a dozen attempts to resolve the issue over the last few years, I am repeatedly told that I must keep making my DCU loan payments to avoid default, with no meaningful investigation or relief. Why I am filing this complaint I believe DCU is : Continuing to collect on a loan for a non-functional product, where the contractor is bankrupt and can not make the system operational. Failing to provide a reasonable resolution or meaningful assistance, despite my good-faith efforts and clear evidence that the financed improvement is not working. I am an ordinary consumer who relied on the representations of both the installer and the financing arrangement. I have been left with a major financial burden and no working solar system.
