Consumer Narrative
Issue : Chime failed to properly address a fraud incident involving their Pay Anyone transfer feature. I was the victim of a scam, and Chime dismissed the matter without meaningful investigation or support. What happened : I was contacted by an individual offering sports tickets for sale on Saturday, XXXX XXXX.They sent highly convincing doctored screenshots, fake texts, and even a screen recording showing what appeared to be legitimate tickets. I have the full message history demonstrating that the seller misrepresented the product and knowingly deceived me. Based on these misrepresentations, I used Chimes Pay Anyone feature to transfer approximately {$400.00} to the individual. Once the transfer was sent, the individual immediately blocked me online and disappeared. This was a clear case of fraud. I contacted Chime immediately and I offered to provided all evidence, including the chat history and proof of deception. Chime refused to help in any capacity and repeatedly stated that Pay Anyone transfers are the same as giving cash to someone, and therefore they can not assist. When I asked about offering evidence, they declined and said they'll do so if they deem it as appropriate. They closed the dispute without conducting a meaningful review, and the fraudsters Chime account appears to still be active. Why I am filing a complaint : I understand that Pay Anyone transfers may not fall under Regulation E. However, my concerns involve broader consumer protection issues : Chime did not meaningfully investigate the fraudulent account. Chime dismissed the fraud report using a scripted response without reviewing the evidence I offered to provide. Chime allowed a scammer to continue using their platform without taking action. Chimes disclosures about the Pay Anyone feature are inadequateusers are not clearly warned that the feature functions like irreversible cash and offers zero recourse. I received inconsistent, unclear, and dismissive communication from Chime in response to a clear fraud incident. I am not only concerned for myself, but for the safety of other consumers who may be similarly defrauded through Chimes Pay Anyone system. Documentation I can provide : Full chat history showing deception Screenshots and screen recordings the scammer used The Pay Anyone transfer details Timeline of communication with Chime Evidence that the scammer blocked me immediately after receiving funds I am asking the CFPB to review Chimes handling of this fraud report and ensure proper consumer protection practices are followed.
