Consumer Narrative
Subject : Misleading Pre-Approval Denial Reason / Inaccurate Explanation Provided Complaint : On XX/XX/year>, I submitted an online pre-approval request for the Capital One T-Mobile credit card. I received a written notice stating that I was not pre-approved and that my income was insufficient for the amount of credit requested. The letter also states that this was not a credit application, and no credit check was performed. This is the issue : 1. It is not possible to determine insufficient income without a credit evaluation. If no underwriting, credit inquiry, or verifiable assessment took place, the stated reason ( insufficient income ) is misleading and inaccurate. This contradicts the Fair Credit Reporting Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act requirements that denial reasons must be accurate and reflect the actual basis for the decision. 2. I believe the denial reason was a generic or automated explanation that does not reflect the true basis for the decision. A creditor can not state income insufficient without reviewing any data related to income, debt, or creditworthiness. Since Capital One confirmed they performed no credit check, the reason given can not logically be the true factor. 3. I am entitled to a clear, accurate explanation of the factors used. XXXX requires that adverse action notices provide a correct reason for a denial. Even though Capital One states this was a pre-approval and not a formal application, the company still provided an adverse-action-style notification containing an incorrect, mechanically generated reason. 4. I am requesting clarification and correction. I am requesting : A statement of the actual reason my pre-approval was declined. Confirmation of whether an internal policy restriction or other non-income-related reason was the real basis for the decision. Whether any internal historical account data ( even decades old ) was used. I am not disputing Capital Ones right to approve or deny credit ; I am disputing the accuracy and honesty of the reason given. The explanation provided does not reflect the facts and appears intentionally misleading. I am requesting that the CFPB ensure Capital One issues an accurate explanation of the basis for this pre-approval denial. Thank you.
