Consumer Narrative

Because of XXXX and its debt collectors handling of this alleged account, I have suffered * * substantial, concrete damages in three areas : employment, housing, and emotional/mental distress. * * Their conduct involves inaccurate and inconsistent billing, use of multiple collection agencies on the same disputed balance, and continued reporting of this account as a collection despite XXXX own written statement that my equipment was returned and unreturned-equipment charges would be removed. This has resulted in an erroneous negative tradeline that has directly harmed my livelihood and stability. Employment : I received a conditional job offer that was expressly contingent upon a background and credit review. When the employer pulled my credit, the XXXX collection account and related derogatory information appeared. Shortly thereafter, the offer was rescinded. The only negative, unexplained item of this magnitude was the XXXX collection. Because this collection is being reported inaccurately and in a confusing manner ( shifting balances, multiple collectors, and unresolved disputes ), it directly contributed to the employer viewing me as a higher-risk candidate and withdrawing the job opportunity. This is a clear loss of income and career advancement that can be traced to XXXX and its collectors reporting failures. Housing : I was also denied housing after a landlord/property management company reviewed my credit report and relied on the presence of the XXXX collection account as evidence of serious delinquency. As with the job loss, the inaccurate and disputed XXXX tradeline was a major negative factor. I lost a specific housing opportunity and have experienced housing instability as a direct result. The continued reporting of this account as a collection, even after equipment was confirmed returned and even while different agencies have attempted to collect or have had their tradelines deleted, is unfair and misleading and has had real consequences on my ability to secure a home. Emotional and mental distress : Beyond the financial and practical losses, this situation has caused ongoing emotional distress. I have spent significant time and energy disputing the account with credit bureaus, responding to multiple collectors, gathering documentation, and trying to correct errors I did not create. It is extremely stressful to know that my name and social security number are being associated with a disputed, inconsistently reported collection that has already cost me a job and housing. I continue to experience anxiety every time I apply for employment, housing, or credit, knowing that this inaccurate negative information may appear and be used against me. Given this pattern of harm, I am requesting that the CFPB require XXXX and any associated collectors to : XXXX. Completely remove this alleged debt from my credit reports * * by deleting the XXXX collection tradeline and any related collection tradelines with all consumer reporting agencies ; XXXX. Report a {$0.00} balance and cease all collection activity on this account ; and XXXX. Confirm in writing that the tradelines have been deleted and the account is no longer being reported or pursued. At this point, anything short of full deletion and a XXXX balance will allow ongoing damage to my employment prospects, housing options, and emotional well-being. The reporting of this debt is inaccurate, incomplete, and misleading, and the only fair resolution is its complete removal from my credit files and the cessation of all collection efforts.
