Consumer Narrative
My wife and I received 3 letters from Capital One two dated XX/XX/year> and one dated XX/XX/year>. The letters stated that " As part of our efforts to comply with federal law, we need to gather and maintain certain information about our customers. We took at look at this account and noticed that some information is missing or may be inaccurate ''. The letters went on to request the primary or secondary account holders Tax ID Number and provided what documents needed to be sent to verify this and the two methods for sending the documents either fax or mail, neither of which is a secure method of sending information. The documents Capital One wanted sent by an unsecure method were a copy of my drivers license and a copy of my social security card. Two pieces of information that in the wrong hands could be a catastrophe for me. On XX/XX/XXXX I contacted Capital One and spoke with a representative who identified himself as XXXX. After a lengthy discussion I provided the representative with my social security number and was told that I was " all set ''. On XX/XX/year> while attempting to use my credit card I learned it was suspended. I contacted Capital One sever more times speaking with the Fraud Department and the Escalations Department but was unable to resolve this issue. My one account that was suspended was a rewards account with a balance of rewards due me of {$120.00}. My first complaint is that Capital One should not be allowed to require customers to provide sensitive information by unsecure methods exposing its customers to potential financial harm. Second Capital One should not be allowed to seize a customers earned rewards. If Capital One suspends an account they should still be required to pay out earned rewards.
