I initially found out about the debt in XX/XX/XXXX through XXXX XXXX. It was for Rent Recovery Solutions ( RRS ). When I saw the debt, I thought it was a mistake because I had paid my full rent balance when I left the apartment complex in question. I also never received any communications at all about the debt. XXXX When I saw the debt again on my XXXX report, I contacted Rent Recovery Solutions to inquire about the debt and why I'd never been contacted. They said they did contact me, but when I inquired about the contact information they had, it was a phone number I had no recollection of and the address of the apartment complex to which I had moved out of and allegedly owned the debt. They also mentioned that they had contacted my mother, which is not something that should have taken place. I called the complex and they let me know there was no rental debt, but debt due to some belongings being left behind. I called RRS and asked if there were any pay-for-delete options and they told me there wasn't because I didn't handle the debt within a specific time frame. However, I didn't have the opportunity to do so because I had not been contacted about the debt. When I further inquired about this, I was scolded and told it was my responsibility to make sure the apartment complex had the right contact information, which is completely unreasonable. I eventually agreed to settle the debt at a discounted rate on XX/XX/XXXX and was told I would receive a paid in full confirmation in a couple of days. XXXX I checked my XXXX account to ensure the debt 's status had been updated to reflect that it was paid. Instead, I found a reporting of a XXXX XXXX balance of the difference of the amount owed and the amount settled despite paying the debt on XX/XX/XXXX. I disputed the debt and included my receipt that showed I paid the debt, but RRS reported that the info was correct. I disputed again a week later and RRS reported the info was correct again despite the balance being paid. XXXX I reached out to RRS via phone to get an explanation and I was told that the representative who handled my case did not close out the account as paid. Because of the incompetence of RRS, I have a false XXXX XXXX status and balance on my credit report for XX/XX/XXXX despite the debt being paid in XXXX. I spoke to someone else after not being able to get in contact with anyone after numerous calls and was told my case was not handled correctly and that I will have to wait until XX/XX/XXXX to see if it updates correctly. I've put a lot of effort into cleaning up my credit so I can purchase a car and home, and the incompetence and mishandling of my case by Rent Recovery Solutions has delayed and put a damper on those plans. I hope the CFPB takes action to ensure Rent Recovery Solutions no longer has the license to mishandle cases and be responsible for something so important as the credit health of those attempting to repair their credit.
