I have called and spoken with and also use their website to try to correct personal information which was not deleted, it was updated. this is inconsistent and incorrect protocol. And using fraudulent activity, misleading activity, and removing the information from my account.. Fair Credit Reporting Act ( FCRA ) The main federal law governing credit reports. Gives you the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information on your credit report. Credit Reporting Agencies ( CRAs ) like XXXX, XXXX, and TransUnion must investigate disputes within 3045 days. If information is found to be incorrect or unverifiable, it must be deleted or corrected. You also have the right to a free copy of your credit report annually from each major CRA. 2. Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act ( FACTA ) Amended the FCRA. Gives consumers the right to : Obtain a free annual credit report. Place fraud alerts if they suspect identity theft. Dispute errors more easily. Requires creditors and CRAs to truncate account numbers on certain documents to reduce risk of fraud. 3. Equal Credit Opportunity Act ( ECOA ) While focused on preventing credit discrimination, it indirectly affects credit reporting. If a lender reports incorrect information that results from discriminatory practices, it can be challenged under ECOA. 4. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ( FDCPA ) Applies to debt collectors, not directly to CRAs. However, if a collector reports false or inaccurate debt information to CRAs, you have rights under both the FDCPA and FCRA to dispute it. 5. State Consumer Protection Laws Many states have their own versions of the FCRA. Some states provide additional protections ( e.g., shorter investigation timeframes, more damages if CRAs fail to correct errors ). For example, Californias Consumer Credit Reporting Agencies Act gives enhanced dispute rights. 6. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ( CFPB ) Rules The CFPB enforces the FCRA and issues regulations. Consumers can file complaints directly with the CFPB if CRAs or creditors fail to correct errors.
