Consumer Narrative
I previously had a utility account with XXXX electrical co-op, but after COVID hit I lost my house and could not pay my bills, so the account with XXXX went into collections and my power was shut off permanently at the end of XXXX. I have not made any payment of any kind against that outstanding balance since then. I did report this account as unpaid due to COVID with all of the credit bureaus, but at some point the 3 bureaus put the debt back onto my credit report with no mention of the COVID designation. Eventually the outstanding debt was sold to one or more debt collectors, none of which have I spoken to or communicated with in any form or fashion. I have not made any payments of any kind to the original company or to any subsequent debt collector, yet they continue to report that I have made a payment and that the account was opened recently on my credit report. I have disputed this information multiple times with all 3 bureaus, but they continue to claim that the current debt collector has provided the necessary documentation to prove that the information is correct. It is impossible to provide proof of something that doesn't exist. I have stated as much to all 3 bureaus multiple times but they have done nothing, nor have they shown me whatever fraudulent documents the debt collector is using to support their false claims. If a debt collector is required to send supporting documentation that proves their information is reported correctly, then that info should be shared with the consumer that initiated the dispute, especially if it results in the credit report not being corrected. If a debt collector is providing fraudulent documentation to the credit bureaus for monetary gain, they have violated federal law and should be held accountable.
