I was informed of a debt I allegedly owed from the collections company AmSher ( www.amsher.com ). AmSher also submitted a report to the XXXX credit bureau which affected my credit score very negatively. On XX/XX/year>, I received a reply to my request for verification of the debt claimed to be owed. The email contained a copy of the original bill from XXXX XXXX ( XXXX XXXX ). The bill was clearly for a different person : completely different first name and different ( by one letter ) last name, for a person living at an address in a state where I've never lived, nor is someone I know. I asked them to no longer attribute this bill to me and to remove the credit report. They indicated they had the ability to correct the report if I paid the debt. I clarified that I have a different first and last name and the bill is not mine. Their response was to tell me I had to go through a lengthy and burdensome disputing process which included filing a police report and contacting a notary public. AmSher 's actions may violate the Fair Debt Collections Practice Act ( FDCPA, 15 U.S.C. 1692 ) which prohibits debt collectors from using false or misleading representation to collect a debt, and the Fair Credit Reporting Act ( FCRA, 15 U.S.C. 1681 ) which prohibits reporting inaccurate information to a credit bureau.
