At XXXX on XXXX XX/XX/XXXX, I decided I was going to open a TD checking account. I did my research and it seemed perfect. The website boasted the account could be opened entirely online without stepping into a branch. It said I could add a virtual debit card to my XXXX XXXX and use it until I received my debit card in the mail. That all sounded GREAT. This bank is over XXXX hours from me. I was able to open the account, no problem. They collected all my identifying information ; ID, SSN, DOB, Address, email and phone number. They flashed the XXXX XXXX on the screen, explaining why they needed to collect that information. Once I opened the account, I XXXX the money I had in my old account ( at a different bank ) into my new account. I used the same phone number, address, email address.. It was all the same. The XXXX even said from me to me to fund my new account. Right after TD bank got my money, my account suddenly froze. No explanation, no reason ( as the XXXX was the only transaction ). Nothing literally changed. TD bank didn't call me, I had to call them to figure out what was happening. Once I finally got ahold of the rep, she told me I would need to step into a branch for verification. She told me my account was opened, but as soon as I added money to it, they froze it. The XXXX XXXX requires banks to verify that stuff BEFORE opening the account ... Not after the account is opened and money was added. It truly feels like extortion and theft. Im left with no money yet they want me to travel XXXX hours for a branch. No where in the fine print does it say anything about going into the branch. As a matter of fact, they boast on their website about not having to do that. Ive had other people tell me TD bank has done this to them. This type of conduct flies in the face of the XXXX XXXX and customer service just doesn't care.
